Re: Lazy rev counter
Well this pot hole saga goes from bad to worse. Clunky front end aside and problem on rev counter, something in the rear (pot hole side and both wheels went through) went clunk tonight and now sounds like a bag of spanner’s inside and out over rough surfaces.
Sounds high up in the strut (but I could be wrong) so think the top mount or strut itself may have given up. Springs are new and so signs of breakage. Visually Trailing arms, sway arms, roll bars and bushes all look alright, drop links are new and look ok.
Damn roads! No wonder the nation are turning to SUV’s and Crossovers!!

Re: Lazy rev counter
Thanks gents….I’m leaning toward top mount fail at the rear. Could be the issue up front too as only when the struts compress over say a speed hump do I get the clunk sound, maybe the bearings are worn. Rev counter I’ve still not done anything with, for the sakes of £18-£20 May just put an Ignition coil in and see if that cures the issue before forking out on a complete new distributor.
It’s booked in to the garage next week as won’t have the time to investigate it now. Hopefully nothing too expensive

Re: Lazy rev counter
I have a horrible feeling the rev counter problem is a 'mechanical' one , like when you drop a wind-up watch. The bearing at one end of the balance staff breaks , your rev counter has a similar bearing in it.

Re: Lazy rev counter
Garage took a look, they’ve no idea on the Rev counter issue, shared your suggestions and they’re of the opinion to try a replacement ignition coil first as last as it’s around £18 so not a bank breaker as such.
Suspension they suspect top mount at rear as springs and drop links are new and worn shocks at the the front but they’ve suggested shocks and top mounts on all corners as all looking a tad tired.
Going to order up the parts from AutoDoc and they’re gonna take it all the very end of the month.

Re: Lazy rev counter
Further to my last post it would appear that the front struts are rather difficult to obtain mainly for the right hand side.
Can anyone confirm any of the following….
1) the rear struts are/are not side specific.
2) Are the Mazda MX6 struts identical to those found on the Probe? (Reason I ask is EBay list a few for the Mazda but no mention of the Probe)
3) KYB are listing two part numbers for front right and left, does this mean there are more than one design? (KYB634044 & 45 OR KYB334215 & 16)
Thanks yet again all
