Water pump??

Post by Slick » Thu Sep 19, 2019 4:25 pm

Ok, so here we go.......

Had a misfire, and hunting on idle so guessed plugs, leads or dizzy
Replaced all, misfire gone, but then temp gauge going through the roof,
Changed thermostat, and eventually hunting stopped too, but still running hot, rad cold, and top right hose as you look at it highly pressurised....

No hot air in car, then suddenly have some.....but fluctuates
On idle temp gauge goes up, hot air in car cools down, give it some revs and temp gauge goes down and cabin air heats up...

Thinking water pump ??
Belts were changed a while ago, but everything is turning ok....

If pump was on way out in first place would it affect misfire I had?

How long do they fail over? Seems odd earlier in year had same overheating issue after being stood, but put that down to radiator, which seems fine now........

No visible leaks, or evidence off....
Take rad cap off after running a bit and blows all water out like a geyser

Pumps don't usually fail as in the impeller falls off and you get no circulation. If they go it's usually the Shaft seal that leaks causing a loss of coolant.
I would take the Stat out again put the housing back on refill it and run with no Stat until you get both rad Hoses hot.
Keep topping up the Water while you do this to make sure you've got no air locks etc.
Might take a while to get to full temp but then you'll know if your circulating through the whole system and it will show if the pump is knackered or not.
If it all settles down when fully hot then it's a iffy Stat that's not opening and closing as it should.

When I changed my water pump the impeller was badly
Corroded, so wouldn’t of been doing much, also the
Impeller can come loose on shaft thus not circulating
Coolant properly 😉
