Smoking

Related to my previous post on the fuel pump, but I thought I'd do it separately in case it helped someone else.

Having had my '95 2.5 running yesterday for the first time in over a year, it was smoking like a bandit.

It was still smoking after 30 minutes of idling! (although not as badly)

Do we think:

a) it will clear given time?
b) a bit of injector cleaner will sort it?
c) the engine seals have 'had it' with it not turning over for 15 months?

Have you checked the compression, as they may be related, ie smoking and non starting?

when you say smoke , what colour is the smoke,
One thought, with the problem you have had, were does the unspent fuel go while you are turning the engine over with out it firing, :?:
White Smoke should clear, Blue smoke = burning oil

Another thought try changing the cat if you have a spare (or fit a pipe) you may have damaged the cat??? due to unspent fuel :?:

Change the fpr as may be Knackered and over fuelling ;)

Cheers for the suggestions guys.

FPR already replaced (along with solenoid too) as part of the non-starting diagnosis
Don't have a spare cat, although it does look a little small for the job. Anyone got a spare?
Do have a pipe, but surely it would smoke with that on too?

Not checked compression since car idles perfectly fine once it's going.

Quick questions though.

What components are involved in the 24v cold-start?
Is there an auto-choke or is it purely the FPR and solenoid?

Having sprayed a small amount of easy-start this morning to get it fired up, it was idling at 780rpm before settling back to 650 once warm.
My other (97) 24v runs at 900 or so before dropping back to 650 when warm.

How are the cold-start revs set?

when cool my Idles at just over 1000rpm, then drops to 700rpm,
sounds to me that you may need to restart your base idle (only set it when engine is up to temp) as you know :D

I did the timing and the idle at the same time a day or two ago. Redid the timing once I got the air filter etc back on but it didn't need altering.

Autodata gave me the 650 figure but I may adjust it to similar to your 700, which should push the cold idle up to about 950.

'Auto Choke' is set by the IAC Valve under the Throttle Body.
It's spring loaded inside and relies on Wax Melting as the Engine Warms up to release it.
Could be sticking a bit by the sounds of things.
Fans coming on all the time sounds like the TPS needs to be reset slightly. This can only be done with the Link in the Diag box.
Would be worth checking that the Butterfly is closing fully and operating smoothly in the Throttle Body.

I am no tech but I do believe the simplest fault is often the case.Given the fact you say you have not driven it for awhile the first thing I would say is it may clear.I had the same problem when I didnt drive mine for a bit and worried myself sick as it was smoking like a bandit but it cleared after maybe max 2 hours driving.So give it a run and if it doesnt clear follow the suggestions of the guys who know more than me.

Hi guys.

Not smoking any more (not as much anyway) but it failed MOT on emissions. Apparently it's running way, way too rich.
I thought this odd since it's struggling to start when cold, at least until I add MORE fuel!!
