Happy to say the power steering fluid was clean and it's level is fine

Sadly the pump is shot,have got another & cpt black is coming to my rescue
Going to replace belt at the same time too,is gates 4pk923 suitable?

Oh dear ..unusual for the power steering pump to go on these though I only know of one other in my whole time of ownership ..hope you get it sorted mate

Did buy a cheap 24v power steering pump from ebay
Hopefully it's ok or I'll be knocking on your door

Stuff wears out,luckily for me he's also offered to do the fix for me too
Got her booked in for a weeks time,be good to get it all sweet again

On my 16v I had occasionally stiff steering when manoeuvring (after about 10 years) whilst on my present 24v (basically the same I believe) I had stiff steering all the time when I bought it 4 years ago. The 16v was cured with one complete oil change, whilst the 24v took two to get it right out of the system. Nothing else was done to either car though quite naturally I was looking for more dramatic problems. Oil will do its job in an enclosed system for a very long time, but not forever! These cars are at least 21 years old now and hydraulic oil in particular is very hygroscopic, which is to say that it absorbs moisture, and water is alien to oil and will cause it to deteriorate in viscosity and shear resistance.
With the problem as described, I'd personally sort the belt tension first (It stops squealing when you turn because by turning you open a port in the servo control valve and allow oil to flow, and thus it dips in pressure and thus torque required to turn the pump reduces). Then I'd drain and refill the system as thoroughly as possible. I'd not be looking at replacing the pump unless there was debris in the reservoir filter, because you'd see the tale-tale signs of wear there.
Oil, air, fuel and water! look after them and they'll look after you and the hardware will last forever! Good luck!
