Code 16 EGR

Post by Micron » Tue May 18, 2021 9:21 pm

I checked the codes on the Rio and it came back with code 16 EGR Valve Position

What does that mean in English, what do I need to do to fix it?

EGR is Exhaust Gas Return or recirculation. The valve returns a metered amount of exhaust gas back to the intake manifold, reducing the oxygen intake which lowers the combustion temp and in so doing reduces the NOx, Nitrous Oxide level and the CO2 levels. It cuts fuel consumption too. There is a sensor that picks up the valve position and tells the ecu all about it. If its genuine, it sounds like a dodgy sensor or connection.

When I had my non starter, I had all kinds of so say faults like that but all were spurious in the end. (CPS damaged wire as it turned out).

The valve and sensor are on the back of the engine on the left side, actually the cylinder head, so at the top.

There is also a solenoid involved. Usual problems with them, broken nipple or brittle pipe work. The valve itself can jam up with carbon.

Hi,
when you say the left side, is that as you look from the front? also are they both bolted to the head and would you have any pictures, although I could look in the parts book!

Right hand side looking from the front, bolted to the rear head. Round, about 3inches across, an electrical connector, a vacuum line and a coolant hose connected to it.

In the state, many Probe owners, blank the EGR off :)

Mine is for show only, gasket replaced with solid copper gasket. Code 16 is blanked out in my ecu too.
