Hey Adam.

Just to add that if it is a Sensor that's gone bad it will be the Management Temp Sensor (Plug Connector) and not the Gauge Sensor (Spade Connector) that needs to be replaced ;)

I think i'm right in saying that the Gearbox fluid on the Autobox is cooled via the Radiator. If the Car ran out of Water then the Autobox Fluid will also have got very hot. Based on what i read and my own troubles with a Range Rover Gearbox, heat is the cursed enemy of Gearbox fluid. So i would say...

Last bad Rev Counter i had i cured by changing the Electronics unit for it on the back of the Clock.
Mine was intermittent and would show revs when it felt like it.
