I have LEDs in mine and there's no effect.
I guess its start with the usual suspects, look at dodgy earths. its often the cause, especially around the lights where there's loads of wet and crap being thrown around.

I have no experience of this but ...
Once you have the lower bolt loosened so that it slides freely, just pivot the alternator down and remove it. You do not need to completely remove the bolt.

it's not even that predictable, it will run nicely and do relatively long journeys for a number of days or even weeks and then just not start again, it never conks out once started
