I have noticed a petrol smell when first starting up, it does not last long and can't be smelt once the car is moving. I have looked in the engine compartment on start up, no smell or signs of the leak, no sign of fuel leak anywhere. The fuel consumption has not increased.
My suspicion is that it my be coming from the fuel tank.
My question is, is there some fuel tank vent pipe that may be split. I am not sure the exact location of the tank.
Any suggestions would be appreciated .

Re: petrol smell on start up.
Petrol tank under rear seats, vent pipes are behind a plastic panel in the rear passenger wheel arch,
remove passenger rear wheel, and you will see the plastic panel on the right hand upper, 10mm nut and a screw holding it, remove panel and you will see the vent pipes connecting to the petrol filling line, and you can follow pipes to tank

The other horror vent pipe story is viewed by removing the rear nearside wheel splash cover.
Where all the vapour return lines link up to the petrol filler pipe.

Thanks for the information, the car is due for a service soon, the brake light comes on under braking,it looks like the pads will need changing so it could be checked at the same time.
Thanks again.

Check the brake fluid first, because if it's a bit low it will give the same result. if it is, the next question is why is it low?
