Waterpump and Cambelt

Post by KBUK » Wed Aug 08, 2018 12:46 pm

A couple of weeks ago I noticed water dripping under the car. Assumed it was from the AC since we've had such nice weather.

When leaving work noticed that there was still a puddle under the car so checked it out and it felt slightly greasy, assumed it was oil that had mixed with the running water. This weekend when driving the car temps shot up into the red so pulled over and found I'm missing coolant...

Only bought the car a month ago and the guy I bought it from mentioned that the cambelt had been slightly over tightened but he didn't drive it enough to warrant getting it sorted as it was "fine but would need replacing eventually".

To top it all off, it has started making an interesting noise that sounds like one of the bearings on the engine is going (sounds like it is one of the two either side of the plug in the image attached), thought that this might be related to the over tightened belt?

To my understanding, the cambelt and water pump are running from the same belt so I was going to replace the whole lot. I've never done this sort of work before so if anyone has any experience/recommendations with this that they can share it would be much appreciated?

hi there is a write up on how to change the cambelt, but you have to be a full paid up member (£10),
you can`t over tighten the cambelt but you can over tighten the aux belts
and on they don`t run from the same belt

The tensioner tightens the cam belt and you can bet your life on it that the rattle or knocking you can hear from that side is proberbly a failing Cambelt tensioner ........you should really when you do a Cambelt change do the water pump and the tensioner all at the same time

OOoof, 'in the red' , that's not good.
If you believe in prayer , pray. Then, when the engine is cold , fill the system with coolant to the very top, both caps off. Bonnet open.
Start the engine , look closely for 'air' bubbles which continue to appear after a minutes running.
No bubbles, good , lots of bubbles bad.
