make some wooden wedges and tap in behind the shaft to pop out
its only a snap ring holding it in

Whatever else, once you have got it out , do not shake or knock anything out of place before putting the shaft back.
You really need the ' Transaxle plug ' to fill the hole while the shaft is out.

Thanks we have tried everything pretty much everything was going to take the drive shaft up from the other side and hope there is enough space to get a little bar in to tap it out if not will have to drop the whole gearbox

Dont remove the other drive shaft/intermediary shaft, the pinnion wheel will drop when you finally free off the shaft you are working on and that will entail a gearbox stripdown, i know this from my own experience. Luckily the guys in this great club came to my rescue and supplied and delivered a replacement box from South Wales to my doorstep and even delivered it to the inside of my garage.
Bet you remember that night Malcolm, and the rain. :bigshock: :bigshock: :) =D> =D> , And a special mention to Slick for the supply of the box. =D> =D> =D>

Could be that the retaining clip is damaged and it jamming it from coming out, I know that doesn't help but sound like a 14lb hammer is needed

Decision time.
The retaining clip should have sprung into the release position by now.
Uncontrolled force (2 X 14lbs +! ) will either work, or break something.
Or, remove the whole gearbox, etc , and do it 'on the bench'.

I just don’t want to drop the gear box lol I will just keep trying but I reckon the clip is stuck so it’s not letting the shaft out

The book says the 'ring' holding that shaft expands into the counterbore when you try to remove the shaft.
Somehow, you need to apply an ever increasing irresistible force to that shaft to make that ring climb up the bevel edge of the splines into
the counterbore.
How, and doing it without breaking anything is the trick.

To my thinking, ‘they’ have that wrong :?
Shouldn’t the ring, contract , reduce in diameter, into the grove in the shaft, as pressure is applied ‘pulling’ the shaft out of the gearbox.

Taking the gearbox out the car, won’t help in my opinion

Why do you need to get it out of the gearbox :?: is that end Knackered :?: if its
only to replace the Hub end( knocking/split gaitor) and you want to put in a new shaft
why not split it and fit to the gear box joint just an idea

Could split the shaft @ the Inner CV joint, like I do if I do a Outer CV boot change.

I just got a hole new unit so it needs to come out to put my new unit in and I am not mechanically minded because when I say I, I actually mean the mechanic that is being paid to do it is doing it lol. The drive shaft is the only thing holding me back putting my baby back on the road after 6 long years of sitting on my drive slowly killing me every time I look at her lol

Explains a lot. He is obviously a bit nervous of breaking something and making it into a big job. Understandable.
Even the sketch in the Ford book shows a great long 'pry-bar' ( jemmy ) levering the shaft out.
