Rough window rubbers

Post by Mondeo55 » Tue May 14, 2019 9:59 pm

Evening all,

The rubber/plastic surround on the rear windows is looking rather aged and sorry for itself. Anyone any suggestions on how to get it back to life or is it a case of needing to remove the windows to replace?

Thanks in advance

The ones on the rear windows are bonded to the glass, I'm not sure how they'd come off. I have the same issue on the rat probe. I did wonder if they could be repaired using something like this https://www.frost.co.uk/rubber-moulding-kits.html

I was advised to buy a silicone spray for rubber to stop my drivers side window sticking and it works.Presumably it is lubricating and protecting the rubber. It wont make the rubbers better but should stip them getting worse.

Interesting problem is this thread as most Probes show some degree of degradation. I think the silicon material Andy has found is intended to create a mold from which other components are made, thus I dont think it would work with this particular product but I think Andy's on the right track so I have had a look and found this filler.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Tech-Plastic-B ... B00CQLSVR0

It purports to be usable on most plastics including vehicle body parts. I think it might be good for filling the pitting, bringing the trim back to a truer profile, then sanding down the whole trim (after masking) to provide a key to the topcoat.

For the topcoat, I found a few including this one (Krylon Fusion. I'd want to do a lot of thin coats sanding each down to get a good result.

Unfortunately, that wouldn't get you out the doo doo with the door gutters where the steel insert rusts and causes blistering. None of my trim is bad, so I'm not going to play with it, but as and when I have to, I'm planning to attempt to replace the gutter with a thin stainless folded strip rolled to the curvature, and if I cant get that to work I know a guy who could shape them in plastic. The tough part wont be replicating the gutter but getting the old gutter out the seal as I think they are a molding. (Unless anyone knows different?)

I'm no chemist, Elaine but its UV that does the damage. So if I was looking for anything I'd go for something like this.

Thanks everyone, fantastic response! Refining the surface and overcoating was my thoughts, with the right stuff it could be doable
