Intermittent engine light

Post by Adam Brown » Tue Oct 27, 2026 9:36 pm

Good Evening All,

1997 24v probe

I've had an intermittent issue when driving my probe.

Car runs great and never had any issues up until now.

However ever so often I get a check engine light flash and flicker up or come on for about 5 seconds while driving then disappear. It wont return it again for weeks. (I drive the car daily). I've never been able to find out what it is as it always disappears before I can get plugged in.

Car runs great and doesn't cause any running issues. It's charging fine as I had the alt go and when it was on its way out it would do this and when it finally went the volts dropped right down and light was on solid. New alt and guage reads where it should.

Anyone got any ideas

Its a altermator charge light rather than a fault code light

Hi, If the car is charging, I would say that you probably have either a loose wire or dirty contact on the plug that goes into the alternator. It might only happen when you go over a bump or something similar.
I would check all the connections for the alternator, including the battery ones, as once started the car will run without a battery.
