Sorry but it reads like you have a head gasket leaking.

Surely that wouldn’t stop it from working for at least a second after topping up and letting run to get rid of air? I don’t have any signs such as frothy/milky oil or oil in coolant.

Cold engine , bonnet up , coolant filler caps off, fill up to very top .
Replace one cap only.
Get someone to start engine.
You watch the open cap.
If bubbles keep coming out , you have a leak.
I hope you don't but................

Not quite the same issue but thought I'd ask on the same topic...Mine blows hot air but is only really hot when you're driving/revving the engine, as soon as you stop at drop to idle it cools off incredibly quickly, within seconds. And vice versa when you rev, the air changes to hot within seconds.

Is this normal?

You might have a blockage in the system, or a faulty water pump impeller.

My bad...low coolant. I haven't used it much this winter and topped it only last week. Heating is fine, now I have to find the leak ...

Check all your hoses, MrP (16v) kept losing coolant turned out to be a faulty hose, and on a 24v check to the pipe that runs between the front and back rocker covers,
