1995 2.0 litre transmission
1995 2.0 litre transmission
Hi All,
Just bought a Ford Probe and fallen completely in love with it. Like all budding relationships we've got a few tiffs that we need to straighten out before we can truly commit to one another. Im also a bit of car newbie so bare with me
The biggest problem: The transmission. Going from first to second is almost undo-able. You can go down the gears (From 3rd to 2nd it goes in quite easily) but not up. We've checked the linkage and it seems fine, but Im afraid to venture into the gearbox alone. I've found an 1998 Probe with a working gearbox for only £400 - It has a bunch of other bits and bobs I could use also - Would the transmissions be the same?
Second problem is a lot simpler. Got a leak in the radiator. A quick search for the cheapest one on ebay brings up: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NRF-52020-13 ... :rk:5:pf:0 Is it madness to buy such a bargain?
Huge thanks in advance to anyone who can offer any advice.
Mikey.

Re: 1995 2.0 litre transmission
before you go down the gearbox change, why not change your gearbox oil and add Molyslip to it, my gearbox was doing the same (over 9 years ago) could get 1st gear and hard to get into 2nd, and not had to change my gearbox, starting to be a bit notchy again so i think its time to change oil again myself
and not a bad price for a radiator, (just make sure its the correct one) saying that I've just bought a 16v radiator for £40 (delivered) for my spare store

You only need 2.7 lt of oil & 23mm socket,
Funnel & length of hose is the easiest way to re-fill the gearbox

Hi - I have a similar problem with my GT, although maybe not as bad?
To shift into 1st i have to give the stick a quick 'wobble' and it goes in easier than just a straight push.
From 1st into second, there is a slight 'catch' to the feel of the gear change and another slight gearstick wobble gets me into 2nd. I can get through gears without these wobbles but you have to push harder. 3rd, 4th and 5th are all fine.
I do find it gets worse over time. If I unscrew the clutch slave cylinder bleed nipple, a good 10 seconds goes by before any fluid comes out. After I tighten, my gear changes feel a bit better - so in my case, bleeding the slave cylinder seems to help a bit? I have had the slave cylinder replaced, so maybe the master is letting some air in?
At the same time as replacing the slave cylinder, I had the garage replace the gearbox oil. The guy claimed what came out looked as fresh as the new stuff and it made no difference in my case.
Just sharing my experiences in case anything is relevant to you. I may try that Molyslip another poster suggested and replace the gearbox oil myself as a next step. You know where you are when you do your own car repairs!

Re: 1995 2.0 litre transmission
Can anyone recommend a gearbox oil? Or do we just use the cheap generic stuff all motor factors sell?

Re: 1995 2.0 litre transmission
Any chance someone could help sourcing radiator hoses? All the sites online are American, and all the british ones dont have stock. Any help greatly appreciated again.
Thanks,
