It’s back! Took the car out today and the issue returned….I think
Lazy was the wrong word rather inaccurate or out of sync suit better…..when it’s cold it’s perfect but as the car gets to temperature it slowly ‘fades’. Always gives a reading but it’s not correct.
So either a speed sensor issue, dizzy starting to fail or earth on top of the gear box needs a clean?
Any other suggestions?

According to the wiring diagram the rec counter is connected to the ignition coil in the distributor. So I'd think that the problem is with the ignition coil especially as it happens more when warm.

You could try another set of clocks, to see if it’s them -

Does the car still run ok when the rev counter fades does it miss fire etc lack of power 
or still run fine if it does
Maybe the pinnacle Rev counter failing or speed sensor failing
or still run fine if it does

Thanks for the suggestions all….
The car runs fine as the counter falls out of sync, only noticeable thing is that the secondaries don’t open as the revs never get high enough to ‘activate’ them. Usually kicks in/opens at 4000RPM.
No misfires or anything like that, tick over is all good etc.

Any suggestions on a good quality one? The car came with a cheap one when I bought it and it split inside causing a breakdown. The plastics had gone all brittle
I got mine from RockAuto, it was a little of £100, came within about 3 days?
