Hi guys,

I've tried to follow the advice on finding top dead centre but do not have anything long enough to put into the cylinder to check the position. Also unsure as to where to turn the engine around manually with socket. I've ordered a spark plug removal tool that is long enough to put the plug back in cylinder 1.

I managed to get the cap off the distributor, it looks pretty new, no unexpected play or burning etc.

Good start.
Now, pull that rotor arm off, don't worry it will only go on one way when you put it back.
Turn it over. look inside the centre hole, check that the three metal leaves that grip the post are there.
Pull that black plastic cover off.
Check that the Hall Effect sensor is clean and doesn't have any metal fragments stuck to it.
The Hall Effect sensor is the device that detects those six 'teeth ' on the spacer passing through the magnets.
If ok ,put it all back together, you've done all you can do.

Hi guys, quick heads up. Managed to bypass immobiliser and that went well. Sadly, ran out of time/day light still haven't managed to check the top dead centre or keep pulling apart the distributor. I'll do this as soon as I get chance. The car is at work so not easy to get to without a car to drive there.

If I check everything and it all appears to be OK, is the next step to get a new distributor or could it be something else?

The real problem , you need to beg, or borrow , a distributor that is known to work, then buy it if it works on your car !
Just because it is new, is no guarantee.
Absolutely essential to get the right distributor for your car, three types , only one works.

Inspiring confidence jrh ;) speaking with a couple of people ATM, hopefully someone can help out. If it works then I'll be making an offer/ordering a new part immediately

The original distributors had little tags stuck to the body of the distributor but yours ..................
What is the firing order on your distributor cap , just the numbers , anti- clockwise will do ?

Hey guys. For the life of me I cannot find this part number tag.

Even managed to pull up an old invoice for the last time it was replaced but doesn't give any info. Going to order the part recommended and fingers crossed!
