Battery tester reading. Updated

Post by fuerte » Thu Jan 02, 2020 2:53 pm

Bought a battery tester
It says 12 and battery is at medium.
So that means it is the battery unless I have misunderstood.
Still starting with maybe a little weird noise on starting.
I am going to change the ht leads too as mine are old and it is starting to show signs of the leads going.
I have a spare new set already.
And I will get the earth checked too.
Thanks everyone.

New battery arrived today. They said it would be tested and sent fully charged.
It arrived covered in battery acid and with a reading of 12 again. They said charge it.
Not happening.I don't have a charger.
Exchange arranged.
What should it read on delivery because it is the last one.
And it costs me every time I get a battery changed.

You are taking the safest option by demanding an exchange.
There is no way acid should have been present on the outside surface of a new battery.

I know no way was I having that.Battery supplier given me a different opinion every time I ring
Just for my safety they say remove safety plugs immediately then when I say I want to return they say OK to leave in over the weekend.
Given the fact I am wheezing due to inhaling fumes.
Is it OK to leave plugs in over weekend because right now if that company told me muck was pudding I wouldn't believe them.
Happy I am sorting it but just reply if anyone thinks it is not safe.

It wont hurt Elaine. There's little to no activity if its not charging or discharging. Stay away from those fumes.

Fully charged the open circuit battery voltage will be about 13 volts but probably a little higher immediately after being charged but that soon goes as its due to an internal capacitance effect not a chemical P.D. You'll struggle to start the car with less than 11.8 volts, say 12.

In Cheltenham there is a battery specialist called Groves. They do nothing but battery's. As a consequence they know what they are talking about. I've known them for a lot of years. When the boss saw the FM, he said, "you don't see many of these, these days" then went on to tell me the battery number and orientation of the terminals before I'd lifted the bonnet! He fitted the new battery for me. That's the kind of help you need. If Cheltenham is a little way out for you, try to find a battery specialist close to you and let them fit it.

Lastly, don't keep that battery in an enclosed space like the house or garage. I'm also very surprised to hear they sent it to you in the post!!! Usually independent couriers don't touch battery's, particularly those with the potential to spill.

All this talk about batteries, well I went out yesterday and when I got back Janice said that her car wouldn't start, I jumped in and sure enough just clicking when turning the key, out with the jump leads and jumped it off, then put her car away, and hooked it up to a charger, the battery only read 12,1 volts, I then said that it looks like it need a new battery, still under warranty? But she check her paperwork and the battery is 6 year old 😮 it had a 4 year warranty, oh dear never mind, not taking any chances I will buy a new one tomorrow 😊

Both were from Tayna. One I stored since September and 2017 and one that arrived yesterday.Alternator reading is what you said.
Don't tell me Tayna told me battery kaput when it isn't.
Will see if reading goes up when I get to the garage 45 minutes away.If it does they can have the one arriving Monday back.
It should have been so easy.
