running without cam covers....??? V6

Post by EL PLATES » Sun Dec 03, 2017 11:01 am

seen some engines of late running without cam covers
a firm believer that everything has a purpose, but

is there any positives or negatives to doing this....

i suppose you can keep a better check on the cam belt wear,
but wouldnt having it exposed allow for grit etc to get in...
which would cause it to wear faster in the first place????

lol lol lol

I wouldn't run a car without them,

Yes you could argue it's ease to check the cam belt but also could get muck, grit and oil on the belt

It may be that they get easily damaged.I had to replace mine on my old probe and the second hand one I got wasnt much better so it may be that they cannot get replacements?

You can mod the (cam) belt covers to fit,and check the
belt  As for running without them :bigshock:
you may lose a Digit or 2  if placed wrongly

When i read this i wasnt thinking of the cam belt plastic cover, i thought you meant the metal cam covers! :bigshock:

I know a couple of people that ran without the plastic covers and never any issues but that may just be luck. Personally id keep them

mmmm
yep my lack of description.... sorry.

i meant the plastic covers on the drivers side of the engine.
they protect the cam belt.

i have seen the engines running without these.
with no problem,
but i expect they would be prone to dirt ingress....

The metal cam covers are the ones over the engine.
its harder to run without these.....

the rear one is under the inlet manifold,
the front is easier to remove...

however.... these keep the oil in the engine
and keep the dust and dirt out

plus air pressure.????
ive seen one running without the front cover but mine
dies if you even take the oil filler plug out?????

hope that clarifies...

cam belt covers are plastic and side mounted.

cam covers are metal and sit on top...

does that help...
