New member new Probe V6 24v

Post by simond1972 » Fri May 12, 2017 9:47 pm

Hi all, I'm simon a new member on the forum. Bought myself a 1997 V6 probe and now I need to find out the best way to get this beautiful car performing as it should. I'm no mechanic, but I am really keen and want to find the best people to give me the best advice. I don't want to list loads of stuff that could be wrong on here as I don't know if there is a load wrong or whether its just 20 years old and tired. Any advice on who or where to contact would be great. Will local garages be familiar with an old car like this or am I going to need specialists, do I look for Ford and Mazda mechanics?

welcome to the club.

as with any car, different makes and models have known problems and fixes.

Congratulations you have come to the right place.

you will find lots of knowledgable people on here so ask away.

first things first is always check plugs and leads,
clean contacts under the dizzy cap
make sure you have oil and the V6 likes a full rad.
(two filling points.....)

let us know where you are in the country wil help others to help you if they are close...

what colour, mileage, interior....

all the best

Cheers Mr plates :D. The car is a kind of Burgundy I suppose faded on the top half of the car though bottom have is nice though. She's got a tan leather interior bolster worn 50% but not ripped rest of interior seems really good all instruments work as. A bulb was out and I changed that ha ha that's about my limit. There is a problem with the steering though its not very light for power steering and when it goes maybe a half to three quarter turn it stiffens up but will then go lighter. The guy I for it of said he fitted a new rack himself!!! And new track rod ends which he said would need aligning properly at a garage as he did this buy eye with a long piece of wood? I'm in Hunstanton Norfolk.

Hi Simon, if you just turn up on the day, it will cost you £14, but like MOJO said, if you buy full membership, and an advance Probefest ticket, you save yourself money, and get more access to the forum?

Wow,

Hunstanton,

You are about equi distance between me and Monkeydog at Spalding,

Also there is another new member very close to me.
Chameleon Sam.

and of course Kit 16V Guru,
and Elland57, Eastern area rep.
:D :D :D :D

and Micron close to them as well

would be good to see you if you can make it to fest.
Its the only place to see so many cracking Probes all in one place.

other than that, if you are Brandon way, just let me know,
and i would be more than happy to give her a look over.

Not a Guru, but had V6's for several years now....

all the best

(PS have you checked the power steering fluid? have you noticed and leaks.
Sounds like it would be good to have tracking checked, but that wouldnt necessarily cause the steering issue you have mentioned, just bad handling and tyre wear........)

Just like the old song, "All you(r Probe) need(s) is love".
Truly, it is just like every other old car, it will need lots of cleaning , removing dirt from underneath all those plastic
panels under the wings. That's easy, but it takes time and you get dirty.
General rule,if it moves, it needs oiling/greasing, you get dirty.
That is all your spare time sorted for this summer.
And if it doesn't start, you need help !

Get the tracking done and it should make your steering feel much more even. I had the same issues with my Laser Tint until I got it done.

I seem to remember they need to be -1.5 each side, and mine was +2 (or maybe it was the other way round!)
Being happy doesn't mean everything's perfect.
It means that you have decided to look beyond the imperfections.
