Engine cutting out with pop up lights

Help please. My engine cut out when I was testing the front light for MOT. The pop ups got stuck. I could hear a noise coming from the alternator also the passenger side pop up motor & at the fuse box area at the accelerator pedal. Which sounded like something shorting out but no burning smell. The only way to stop this was by disconnecting the battery then winding the pop ups down by hand. Then reconnecting the battery. If I didn’t manually put them down with the red twister. Then reconnect the battery the car wouldn’t start & the noises would all continue. When this happens the blue full beam light flashes faintly on the dash along with others. I changed the alternator tonight. But still the same problem. I managed to drive it home approximately 5 miles pulled up to open the gates. It cut out because the passenger pop up tried to come up while I was closing the gate & killed the car once again. This time it won’t start at all.

Please help

Chris

It sounds like one of your head light motors is causing a short, maybe you have caught or trapped a wire?

Can you start it if the lights are turned off?

Rather than disconnecting the battery, you can remove the retra fuse (I think that's the correct name) from the fuse box under the bonnet. It's a 20amp yellow one, look underneath the lid for the name. It won't make them go down, but you can wind them back without taking the battery off.

I would suggest that you try disconnecting both motors, turn on the lights and see what happens, then try turning them off, connect one Motor and try again, them swap over and try the other, hopefully it will give you some clue as to where the problem is?

The wires on my headlight had burnt out and I had to have new connectors and bulbs. It didnt cause your problems but it might be worth checking.

Suspect the noise from the alternator was in fact the osf head light motor
as its just in front of the alternator, when you say noise from inner fuse box
foot well could it have been from the light stalk on the steering column :?:
As it maybe U/S causing a direct, short had it before
When you say now wont start do you have ignition lights etc, turn,s over
just wont fire up :?:
May pay to check your earthing points as you have had it resprayed

Ignition lights came on. But the reset stopped working. The battery is now drained. I’ll charge it when I get in tonight. Then have another play with her.

Managed to sneak home and jump the car. Remove the yellow fuse. Which did stop the light popping up. But engine still cuts out when I hit main beam. Side lights stay on but as soon as I click to main with the fuse removed the engine cuts out.

I would check the light stalk if the car runs with no lights on,had before
when you flick to flash high beam or put to full beam it would cut out
as there was a snapped wire on the light stalk

Update. If I take out the 30amp headlight fuse in the engine bay. The engine no longer cuts out when I use main beam or left indicator. Int more ideas. I’m waiting on a auto spark to turn up. But he keeps getting called away. 🙄

I’m sure that is the first mention of the left indicator so I would go with Kev, and check the stalk
