Furete; the key with the round plastic base is for all the cars door locks, the triangular base and 'C' engraved in it is for the cars ignition. The third key is for the disklok steering wheel security device.

The car is a 1995 M Plate.

Had no previous start issues from when I bought, just randomly cut out one day while idling and has been this way since, all but starting out of the blue Friday night but not since.

I guess what I now need to ask is can anyone provide a step by step guide to locating the immobiliser unit and carrying out the bypass?

Ive stripped the centre console out already.....lots of screws missing! 🙄

Hpw to bypass the immobiliser used to be in the oracle on the old forum but I dont think its on this one.I do think someone else asked recently how to do it and got an answer so try the search facility.
I only know what the immobiliser looks like it is a black rectangular box bolted under the centre console roughly half the size of an average hardback book.
I cant help you find the correct cause but never a bad idea to check the immobiliser has been removed as if the bosch one it is better out than in.

It burst into life again today! Left it to tick over and it randomly cut out after around 1.5min. Struggled to restart but did eventually catch. Held it at 1500rpm for 1 min and then it behaved (apart from it's horrible tapping when warm).

I think it needs a good service, looking around it, I think its previous owner ran it on a shoe string

As I said before I am no tech but just sussed you said low on fuel and you topped up with a can.Is it a possibility you dragging dirty fuel from the bottom of the tank?
That wouldnt help. Most dont but I change fuel filters too.
And I swear by decent branded fuel.
There are loads of possible causes but I start with the simplest solution first.Just me.
Other than that follow the advice of the guys on here that know what they are doing.

Its a good shout actually. Like you I'm religious with servicing and the use of quality parts and fuel. Once ive done the underside its going to have a full service, some quality oil and a fill up with some supreme unleaded. 😁
