Car cutting out and not starting

Hi everyone, got a 95 built 2.0. Took the probe out for a run and it suddenly cut out and wouldn’t restart. Called mechanic out and after a few turns of the key ( it was turning normally at this point but not firing) the battery went dead. So he jumped it and it started first time but soon as he took the leads off, it cut straight out again. So he put a new temporary battery on just to get it home (obviously not the correct size). Struck up first time but was very ropey driving back, kept cutting out but dropping the clutch restarted it. Charged battery fully overnight, car started first time, ran for about 20 minutes then cut out again and won’t restart. Fuel cut off light stays on while cranking but can’t see the button out in the boot. Mechanic seems to think the battery is completely knackered and not giving enough power to the fuel pump. Sorry it’s such a long post but I’m not mechanically minded and any advice would be appreciated, thanks

Sounds like the battery, will run rough for a while as the ECU re learns its self also if
fitted a temp battery it may have been hitting the bonnet
as probe batteries are specific
if you have multi meter get the car started and measure the alternator input across the
battery teminals should be appox 14 volts

Yes the bonnet was definitely hitting the battery as it wouldn’t even close, luckily i was only 5 minutes from home, can you recommend anywhere to get a battery as the ones I’ve looked at are out of stock, thanks

Tayna batteries do them, contact first to get the right one
there should be a list in the Probe oracle (what battery fits)

You also need to check that your alternator is working correctly, if not giving a good output that may be the reason you battery has drained

Right, put new Tanya battery on, car started first time, ran for 20 minutes then cut out, turns over but won’t restart. Literally just put the battery on this morning. Any ideas? Thanks

If running ok for 20 mins i would suspect something is breaking down when hot may be the dissy
have you checked it and gave a clean inside the cap etc
