Steering Lock / Ignition Key Barrel

Post by colinrush » Fri Jun 17, 2022 12:00 am

Hi,

My Probe restoration is fighting me.... N Reg (96) (YOM 94) Early 2.5 24v

Having reversed the car along the drive to a more accessible spot, I jacked the car up and fitted a new wheel liner. I then went behind the passenger glove box to check / clean the connector as i have been getting a code 33 on the air bag. Reassembled everything, ready to check. Restored the battery and put the key in the ignition and it refused to turn to position 1. At the point when the issue arose, the sterring wheel was free moving / steering lock was disengaged. I tried jiggling the key, I tried WD40 and jiggling. I then turn the steering wheel (not sure why - but i did). The steering lock engaged. The barrel still refuses to turn to position one. I have tried hard pull down of steering wheel and bouncing the steering wheel as i try to turn the key. I have also tried to "bump" the key, tapping the key and the lock body (i removed the cowel) all with no success.

The key slips easily in and out - it is a copy but up until this issue had worked without any problem and there had been no early warning of any issue with the barrel. One moment perfect - the next it wont turn.

Any ideas on what the issue is and suggestions over and above what i have tried to date?

I suspect I will have to change the steering lock and barrel - Your thoughts on this?

I've looked in the Oracle and this forum and cannot find any posts showing how it is done.

UPDATE: I have had an auto-locksmith look at it without success. He said the whole assembly needs to come off and most likely be replaced. So I need to source new steering lock assembly and barrel with key. If anyone can help with parts and/or how to do this…. Please do!

As i say this car is fighting me - need help

Thanks in advance

Hi,
The key i have is a good old simple metal key with no transponder of any sort. If you think what you have may do the job, please let me know how much you want for it and i can meet you to collect whenever suits. (I am near Sandwich).
Thanks
Colin

Just want to thank Kev for providing me with a replacement barrel. A true gentlemen. Tomorrow I discover if I am competent enough to fit the thing! Wish me luck. Thanks again Kev
