White smoke

Post by Funokata » Mon Jun 06, 2022 7:01 pm

Hi all, new ish member. Bought a 24v probe about 2 months ago, and love the car. It came with loads of spares and thought I'd put them to use. Had some white smoke under acceleration and at start up when I bought it, have since rebuilt the heads including valve stem seals, head gaskets etc. full fluid and filters changed. Got it running today and drives lovely, however plenty of white smoke still. Most noticeable at start up and pulling out of junctions etc. Oil has stayed clear and looks good, coolant is all still full but have only driven an hour or so.

Anybody any ideas?

I'm a bit stumped personally. I've always thought white smoke was coolant but new head gaskets etc should eliminate that?

Any ideas/help much appreciated.

Caleb

Well that's not good news. Assuming that requires a bottom end strip to rectify.

Correct, it does, but are you 100% certain that it is smoke and not steam (water vapour). Also you say that you have only driven it for an hour, there may be some excess oil from your top end rebuild, maybe drive it a bit more and see if things improve before you strip it down again.

I’m a strong believer, that modern oil, washes the carbon build up, around the piston rings, that increasing the seal.
So, till this build’s up again, you may get smoke

The 'killer test' is the pull-away after a long 50mph downhill stretch with foot off the accelerator .

Thanks guys. I'll drive it some more and see how I go. I did wonder if it was coolant somehow and am just setting about bypassing the EGR cooler as a quick test to eliminate that. It's a bit inconsistent and I can't seem to get it to smoke much while sat on my drive. Seems to happen more after a stretch of off the throttle and then acceleration.

Ah right, that's weird. Wonder how it could have caused that? It's not the EGR, and judging from the drive to work this morning the smoke does have a hint of blue. Looking more like you may have been right Kit, gunna keep an eye on it as it has reduced a touch, I assume from burning off oils from the head rebuild.
