Back to basic,s do you have a key fob to start the car OEM one
Any aftermarket alarms etc added

No aftermarket alarm. Just a key to open the door, twist the ignition and a button to disarm.

have you checked the battery in the fob replaced

Plan of attack
1) Sensor arrives tomorrow - Install, pray, start? Failing that...
2) Bypass immobilizer - pray, start? failing that...
3) new alternator - pray, start? failing that...
4) Panic

Stop, stop ,stop.
You have fuel , air, ignition, now, all that is necessary is for it all to happen in the right order and time.
So, it is check the distributor top plug numbers/leads go to the right plug positions on the engine.
Take number one plug out, check that distributor rotor arm is in that position when the piston is at/near top dead centre.
If that happens , put everything back, try starting engine again.
You are sure the petrol is ok ? ?

I can check the plug (remove sparkplug to check where the piston is)
If I remove the HT lead, should I be able to see where the distributor is currently positioned?

Assuming that the cylinder is in the wrong place or the distributor rotor arm is in the wrong place, how do I align them?
Assuming that I can see the cylinder is at the top, the distributor rotor arm is in the right position and it doesn't start, what is next?

long screw driver to check top dead center/ rear plug left hand plug/ remove and use
crankshaft bolt to turn to fully up and rotor arm should point no1 on dissy ,1 repeat till
dissy/no,1 crank should read 10/12 top dead center

What has caught my attention, is the weak spark on the back bank. Early cars have two crankshaft sensors, one at the end on the crankshaft, and one in the distributor, so having both fail would be unlucky...but not unheard of.

Have you checked the dizzy cap, and rotor arm?

I'd check the timing like cpt black says, then that's one thing off the checklist. The shaking after you let the key go, suggests something isn't quite right with the timing.

Did the RAC bloke check for fault codes?

Good point about 'the shaking'.
That is a serious misfire somewhere.
Are you sure you don't have water getting in via a head gasket leak ?
Check the water level , take both 'rad caps' off and have a look inside the system.
