Tick over base

Hi all cars running a lot better but I’ve tried to turn the tick over down but even with the drew all the way in she is sitting at about 850/900 rpm and I don’t know why the screw is all the way in any ideas cheers

Hi Steve.

To set the base idle the car needs to as below.

1) Remove Airbox Elbow and check Butterfly Flap is fully closed inside Throttle Body. This can be adjusted on the Stop Screw at the top of the TB if
required. Refit Air Intake etc
2) Make sure Engine is fully HOT (As in sat on Drive with Fans coming in and out, both sides of the Rad hot ie stat open)
2) Once up to Temp switch the engine off and put Jumper in Diag Box across TEN and GND
3) Turn Ign on so dash lights up but don't start engine
4) Check TPS position by operating Throttle by Hand on IM. With the slightest touch from rest the Fans should kick in but stop again when released.
5) If the fans continue to run when at rest the TPS isn't in the correct position to tell the ECU the Engine is at Idle
6) If needed adjust the TPS by backing off the 2 Screws and moving it's position on it's slots until Fans operate as above.
7) Start up Car with link in place and adjust idle via the Screw on Top of TB.

Ideally you should also check the Timing at the same with a Strobe Light whilst the engine is running. Timing should be 11 to 12 Deg BTDC. If you need to adjust back off Distributor bolts and adjust position. Be aware that if you get hold of the dissy whilst the engine is running you may get a shock from it.

Correct set up is a balance of timing and Idle Screw adjusting as altering the Timing will effect the Idle level.
Play around until happy with Timing and Idle level (650 to 750 rpm) on a 24V.

8) Switch off, remove link and make sure everything back in place and is done up tight.

Bear in mind that the Link is there so that the ECU does not use it's current Settings and to make it ignore all of the Engine Sensors.
Setting the Idle is a purely Mechanical thing (Air in vs Fuel) and does not need to be influenced by ECU compensations etc.
Because of this it might 15 to 20 Miles of driving for the ECU to relearn where the Idle level is now set etc.
