Driving home tonight, dual carriage (outside lane) went to change gear 3 to 4 but unable to change gear
clutch pedal, near on the floor.
Holly shit where do I go, luckily there was a gap across to the other side of the dual carriage and lucky there was a gap in the other side traffic, so shot across and managed to get off the other side dual carriage, pulled up and car stalled.
Pressed the clutch pedal a few times and it came back up, restarted the car and managed to get a gear,
so set off for home again (3 miles from home) got home and dumped it until tomorrow.
Where do I start. Answer on a post card please

The seals in the master clutch cylinder have become weak, & fail to push the fluid,
Check you haven’t got any leaks, either at the slave cylinder or the flexibility pipe under the battery tray, it no leaks it’s more than likely the above.
have fun, you may have to take the IM of to get to the master cylinder,
On the 16v you don’t have to ( done a couple )
Two bolts on master clutch cylinder, one from under the dashboard on the firewall. Taking the drivers seat out, does improve access.
Either, replace master clutch cylinder, for a new one, ( I’m sure you’re have one), or strip it down & replace the rubber seals.

Always a bit concerned that modern practice shares brake and clutch fluid from a common reservoir.
Lucky you could still use the brakes Malcolm.
Let's hope it is a simple job, a bit strange you never had 'gradual' failure though.

I'd look to see if the Flexi Hose is bulging when the Clutch is operated. Might not have gone yet as in split, so no leaks but swelling meaning no Transfer of Fluid Power.

Thanks for all the tips, just reading up on how best the change things if needed,
Up to now no leaks but gear changes have been funny for a while now, in fact when the engine is very hot sometimes it very hard to engage 1 gear, and that been like that since 2010, over the years tried several thing (mollyslip) that worked fine. But things have got worse recently, even thought about changing the gear box for a spare, or changing the clutch,
So just have to bite the bullet, and start with the ease job first, bleeding the system and then see what next, this is of course after a good inspection of the pipework
