The dirty coolant is not a good sign , I hope it's not too late to flush and refill with the proper coolant.
The proper stuff is not cheap but a lot less than another engine .
Make sure all the linkages and moving parts in the accelerator are moving as they should . That tiny ballrace in the quadrant slot should turn ,not slide in the slot.

Re: Idle Speed MOT Failure
Emissions test below.
I'll flush and refill with coolant tonight, give it a good drive with some vpower and redex in tomorrow morning then get it in for the retest. Simplest solve is if the CO emissions fall below 0.2% in the first test which we weren't far off

Re: Idle Speed MOT Failure
That does point more towards mechanical, rather than anything else, I think as John says, make sure everything is moving freely and a change of fluid should help.

Re: Idle Speed MOT Failure
You could have a slightly sticking IAC valve, thats gummed up when you drive the car normally
does it always return to base idle after heavy rev,s when warm,or stay higher,if higher take apart
carefully and clean with carb cleaner beware the small rubber gasket
