As Kev say, the aux belt have to come off, so might has well to change them, But make sure the 17mm nut on both pulleys are unlocked before trying the adjust the both aux belts. You also need to check that your alternator is working correctly, if not giving a good output that may be the reason you battery has drained

Sounds to me that your alternator could be at fault, did you happen to see what the battery was indicating when the eml was on, top scale or bottom scale or showing normal
I've heard of the eml been on and the engine just cuts out once the battery is not charging.

I'm with John, be careful when tightening up sump plugs, plus watch out for rust on the sump, don't rub it while sump is full, once I accidentally knock rust on a sump and oh dear I had a nice leak pouring from the sump. Jack your car up and check around the sump, plus have a look at the power steer...
