Re: cant engage any gear
Back to Square one again - no gears! The garage who replaced the clutch are going to have another look tomorrow. What is the most likely failure on the old clutch? The thrust bearing? I quizzed him and he made a few claims which where ridiculous - talked about the 'cylinder' which is on the outside ...

Re: cant engage any gear
Oh - the row I thought came from the modded exhaust on my car - is no longer there! All this time I assumed it was meant to sound like that and now the garage have dis/reassembled the exhaust - its gone all quiet and civilised. My wife had a good laugh at that! I'm meant to know about car related st...

Re: cant engage any gear
I think they actually got someone in to do it - someone with a European accent. He approved of the car, mentioned that he owned a Ford Cougar so maybe they had to get some 'experience' in? Anyway - the price and the result was pleasing!

Garage where at it from 8am to 6pm - said it was the worst (most difficult) clutch job they had done!

Re: cant engage any gear
Everything is cheap where I live. Car repairs, housing, rent - no one wants to live here! You do have to be more careful with the end result however. You get what you pay for and its a problem in and of itself.

Re: cant engage any gear
I ended up bleeding the slave cylinder - nothing came out for a few seconds and then fluid came out of the bleed nipple. I can also see fluid on the engine mount below the cylinder so it's obviously been leaking. It now moves the clutch arm when you depress the clutch - still no gear changes though....

Re: cant engage any gear
Ok - I just got my wife to pump the clutch pedal repeatedly. I can see no movement of the clutch arm where the slave cylinder is and it makes an unwelcome noise coming from the master cylinder. Haven't seen any fluid loss in the reservoir or obvious leaks at the slave or master ends. Only had a quic...

Re: cant engage any gear
Do you have any recommendations on buying a new clutch? Think I've had to have one clutch changed in 20 years of driving (MK1 MR2) The kits on eBay seem to range from £80 to £100 - are they good enough? I'm a pretty sedate driver!

Re: cant engage any gear
I can engage gears with engine off. It will be a few days before I can check the gearbox oil - I just found out I have Shingles! I'll take a look at the brake fluid. Is it a shared brake/clutch reservoir? When pressing the clutch, it doesn't stay down - feels normal but a bit lighter. as if there is...
