Check the water level once it has cooled down, and top it up to the brim, you may need to remove the other cap too, but replace the one near the header tank first.

as you say, it might be a stuck thermostat, it could be stuck open, or you may have an airlock, try having the car tick over and warm up with the cap on the engine removed, heater on full. I think what they do, is move the flat so that they probabaly point towards the middle, but not sure what difference it makes, unless you can see a difference when you look at them side on and they sit differently?

I believe that they are, but apparently not if you look at the attached pictures, but I don't really see the advantage , as all that gets move is the flat on the insert?
