Advice needed on drive shaft seals.

Post by Sunfly » Wed May 16, 2018 11:01 pm

The flying machine is in to have a clutch change and I want to change the drive shaft seals at the same time due to a slight weep. Trouble is, the Ford seal 515 35 81 is obsolete and I cant get it from Ford or any motor factors. No doubt its a bog standard spring lip seal, but without more info, I cant identify it. Obviously I could pull it out and measure it, but I'm reluctant to do that just in case there's something special about it.

I measured it as a nominal 35mm shaft diameter from my spare shaft and it only has one lip wear mark on the shaft so its highly likely to be standard. Can anyone tell me the O/D and width or the seal number, maybe from a spare? Alternatively, does anyone know a supplier? I've looked on Probe store, ebay and amazon, and drawn a blank everywhere. Funnily enough, there's loads of crankshaft seals available so why not the drive shafts!

Some more info on this part and where to get it will be much appreciated.

Ta Bob

Thanks everyone for your help - brilliant! I've just ordered two from Petch at Darlington as per Malcolm's advice. Glad I didn't take a chance now as it has an inner lip of some kind that is definitely non standard. Not sure what its for but it looks as though it might be axial sealing rather than journal? Either way, I'm pleased to have found them. My thanks to you all for helping and also John (jrh) who's offered a loan of his plug(s)

Bob
