Engine brief cut out

Post by Funokata » Tue Jan 27, 2026 10:54 am

Morning all.

Over the last couple of months have very occasionally seen the engine cut out whilst driving and "bump" start itself instantly. Sometimes I only know because the rpm needle flicks down, sometimes there's a judder if accelerating.

It's gradually getting more frequent and this morning I was just rolling along at 50 in gear and it wouldn't restart until I pulled over and waited a minute.

Is this another distributor failure? My previous ones have both given hesitation and stutter under acceleration. This time it doesn't seem to matter.

If so is there an alternative to throwing distributors at it? Can anything replace it? That's 4 in as many years

What year is your car? 16v or 24v?

Depending on your replies to the above, it does sound like your dizzy.

Have a look here https://king6fab.com/info/archives/442 it explains how you can fit an external ignition coil.

Do you still have a fob that you have to press?

No, the immobiliser is long gone. Seems to happen about 10-15 minutes into the journey. This morning was a nightmare though, don't feel I can trust it to go anywhere. After it started again I drove it back gently another ten minutes with no issues.

Your other option is to check all of the connections of the moby bypass, because if one has become loose, it could affect the car.
Do you know how it was bypassed?

Not 100% sure to be honest. It was already done when I bought the car. I've seen the remnants behind the bottom of the center console I think.

Would it still be able to crank? Does it just inhibit firing?

There are 3 separate circuits, Starter, Fuel, Ignition. The option to bypass the Moby that is normally used, is to cut each black pair of wires and join them together, before moving on to the next pair (that's how mine is done). The key here is how have they been joined, if you have a bad or dry joint, when you go over a bump etc it could cause the car to blip.

I suggest as soon as you can, you check each joint in turn, if they are just twisted together, I would join each pair with a chocolate block connector or something similar.
