How to fit an outer CV joint.

Hi,
More help needed with my MX-6 2.5 V6 Automatic.
When i removed the drive shafts to change the boots i took one of them apart by removing the circlip from the tri-ball joint but the right side shaft came apart at the outer joint, the shaft simply pulled out of the CV joint without effort so i must have dislodged it trying to get the shaft off the car. The outer joint is held in place by a spring wire the same way that the shafts are held in to the gearbox.
My problem now is that i can't get the shaft to go back in to the joint with the wire in place. I bought a new genuine Mazda spring wire, i've tried with the old wire and i've tried adjusting the new wire so it's a very even fit. When i've done joints like this before i just put the wire in the groove then gently hammered the shaft back in to the joint.
Am i doing something wrong?
The Probe / 626 workshop manual says it has a proper circlip to hold both joints on the shaft but my car doesn't.
Thanks.
Kevin
