Don’t you have an ‘after market’ steering wheel on your car

yes kit and its been on there for a few years now. But today was the first time the airbag light was flashing which is why I was curious what may have caused it.

For you to have an aftermarket steering wheel without an airbag alarm someone must have fitted a 1.0 ohm resistor where the "shorting bar" resistor used to be, so I'd be very suspicious of that item.
The shorting bars job was to create a measurable resistance in the circuit that the module can monitor to check that the circuit is healthy. More or less than one ohm = open circuit or short circuit = fault somewhere = code 32!
